Non-Compliance Suspension
When a driver fails to show proof of insurance at a traffic stop or at the time of an accident, a non-compliance suspension is placed on the driver.
Please Note: The suspension can be removed if valid proof of coverage at the time of the traffic stop or accident is provided to the BMV.
First Offense Reinstatement Requirements
Reinstatement Requirements
This suspension will remain until the following requirements are met:
- Carry a certificate of insurance (SR-22/bond) for three years
- Pay a reinstatement fee
Second Offense Reinstatement Requirements
A second non-compliance offense in a five-year period will result in a one-year suspension.
Reinstatement Requirements
This suspension will remain until the following requirements are met:
- Serve one-year suspension
- Carry a certificate of insurance (SR-22/bond) for five years
- Pay a reinstatement fee
Third Offense Reinstatement Requirements
A third non-compliance offense in a five-year period will result in a two-year suspension.
Reinstatement Requirements
This suspension will remain until the following requirements are met:
- Serve two-year suspension
- Carry a certificate of insurance (SR-22/bond) for five years
- Pay a reinstatement fee

Judgment Suspension
Property damage or personal injury that resulted from the use, care, or maintenance of a motor vehicle could result in a Judgement Suspension imposed from a lawsuit.
Reinstatement Requirements
This suspension will remain in effect until one of the following is received:
- A payment agreement or release from the claimant
- A journal entry from court
- A petition or discharge in bankruptcy
Anyone serving under this type of suspension must file a certificate of insurance (SR-22/bond).

Insurance-Related Suspensions
Security Suspension
A security suspension results when an uninsured driver causes a crash with more than $400 in property damage and/or a personal injury claim as indicated on a Crash Report (form BMV 3303).
Reinstatement Requirements
- Serve up to a two-year suspension
- Submit a payment agreement or release signed by all parties for the damages
- File a deposit for the damages with the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) or provide a petition for discharge in bankruptcy with a schedule of creditors listing the accident claim
If there is a default on the payment agreement, no further agreements will be accepted. Only a full release or a deposit for the remaining balance can be submitted.
