Suspensions & Reinstatements
Juvenile Court Suspension
A court finds an individual under the age of 18 unruly or delinquent or charges him or her with possession or use of drugs, alcohol or tobacco and orders the license or driving privileges suspended.
Reinstatement Requirements
- Serve suspension until 18th birthday or until terminated by the court
- Pay a reinstatement fee

Probationary Suspensions
Probationary Operating a Vehicle under the Influence (OVI)
A probationary OVI suspension is caused by the conviction of a driver with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08 percent or higher who was under the age of 18 at the time of the offense.
Reinstatement Requirements
- Serve six-month suspension
- Complete juvenile remedial driving instruction course at an approved school
- Pay a reinstatement fee
- Retake complete driver license exam
Two Violations
An individual is convicted of or pleads guilty to committing two separate moving violations prior to his or her 18th birthday.
Reinstatement Requirements
- Serve 90-day suspension
- Complete juvenile remedial driving instruction course at an approved school
- Pay a reinstatement fee
- Retake complete driver license exam
Three Violations
An individual is convicted of or pleads guilty to committing three separate moving violations prior to his or her 18th birthday.
Reinstatement Requirements
- Serve one-year suspension
- Complete juvenile remedial driving instruction course at an approved school
- Pay a reinstatement fee
- Retake complete driver license exam

Tobacco Violation Suspension
An individual under 18 years of age is convicted of possessing, using, purchasing or receiving any tobacco product.
Reinstatement Requirements
- Serve suspension of up to 30 days
- Attend approved youth smoking education or treatment program

Weapon on School Property Suspension
A suspension will be imposed if an individual under 19 years of age is convicted of taking a deadly weapon or dangerous ordnance on school property.
Reinstatement Requirements
- Serve court-ordered suspension of one to three years
- Pay a reinstatement fee

School Dropout Suspension
A school dropout suspension is imposed when a school superintendent informs the Ohio Bureau of Motor vehicles (BMV) of the withdrawal from school, frequent unexcused absence or suspension for use or possession of alcohol or drugs of a student.
The individual’s temporary permit, license or right to apply for a license will be suspended until his or her 18th birthday or until the suspension is terminated. The suspension will terminate if:
- The individual is at least 18 years old;
- A high school diploma or GED certificate is received;
- A petition filed in court shows the suspension was set up in error; or
- The school superintendent notifies the BMV that the individual was suspended in error, has satisfied requirements or is now attending/enrolled in an approved program to obtain a diploma.
Reinstatement Requirements
- Serve suspension until termination or 18th birthday
- Pay a reinstatement fee
